A Walk Down Memory Lane

Hello, Everyone!

I wanted to share with you some of my childhood memories. I’m a 90’s kid that grew up in Compton, California. In order to talk about my childhood, I had to look at some really old photos to jog my memory. Enjoy!

Growing up in Compton…

1405650574138If you’ve seen the movie, “Straight Outta Compton” then you might have an idea of how I grew up. Compton wasn’t a safe place. You would hear gunshots, police sirens, and helicopters all the time. This was the main reason why my parents decided to move to Houston, Texas in 2004.

To me, Compton wasn’t that bad. I had a lot of friends that I considered family. We never got robbed, since we had neighbors that looked out for us. There were a lot of car accidents in front of my apartments, which was the only entertainment we had. People never died in the accidents, they only got hurt. However, three other people did die near my apartments. I was never in a gang. I was lucky to grow up with really good people around me.

Living in Compton was hard sometimes. My family and I grew up poor, so we had to find other ways to make money. My family and I used to collect cans and cardboard boxes to sell them. We didn’t make a lot of money, but it was something. I remember going to the back of stores and digging in trash cans to collect the boxes and cans. I remember we used to go together as a family to help out, except for my little sister. She was still a baby at the time. I remember we would sometimes find stuff that the stores would throw away. There was one store that threw away a box with slightly broken pumpkin ornaments. We thought they were cool, so we took them and used it as Halloween decorations. The same thing happened in Christmas.

My parents were always working. I grew up basically raising myself. I had to learn how to do everything on my own. I was a very independent child. I spent a lot of time at my neighbor’s house. My best friend lived there. Her family watched over us most of the time. One of my worst memories was when my mom fell down and hit her head. I was about eight years old and scared out of my mind. I honestly thought she was going to die. Basically, the pipes in the bathroom weren’t working. So, when the upstairs neighbors turned on the water in their bathtub, their water would go down into our bathtub. 1405650520263Yes, it was disgusting! The owners kept “fixing” it. One day, the water overflowed and spread around the house. My mom and I had just gotten home. I stayed outside to play while she went inside. We had white tile floors, so my mom didn’t see the water when she walked in. That’s what caused her to fall down and hit her head. My parents later sued the owners and got a good chunk of money. Also, the bathtub was finally fixed correctly.

Even though living in Compton wasn’t safe, it will always be my home. Moving was one of the hardest things that I had to do.

Growing up with two older brothers…

Growing up with two older brothers was pretty awesome.  My two brothers were my personal bodyguards. They were always very protective of me. Of course, since I was the only girl, I was the favorite child. At least until my little sister was born.

I was never like other girls. I was more of a tomboy than a girly girl. I was always around boys. I grew up playing with video games. I liked playing Nintendo 64 games such as Super Mario, Nascar and Cruis’n World. I also played Grand Theft Auto. I don’t play them anymore. I didn’t have any girl role models to really help me be girly. I didn’t start learning all of this girly stuff until I was in middle school.

Growing up with 90’s movies / shows…

If you’re a 90’s kid, then you probably grew up watching some the best movies and shows. Here are some of my favorites.

Toy Story / Hercules / Rugrats – Toy Story is my #1 favorite movie! Woody is my favorite character!  I used to have a Woody doll and I would actually try to see if it moved. Unfortunately, it never moved. By the way, Toy Story 4 will come out on June 15, 2018! I’m so excited! / I love Greek Mythology! I used to have a book about Hercules that had little buttons with sounds. I’m not so sure what happened to the book. / Rugrats was really cool! I honestly didn’t love the character, Angelica. She was really mean and I’m nothing like that. My favorite character was Tommy, the leader of the group. I was always adventurous and the leader in my group of friends.

Cinderella / Beauty and the Beast – These two movies are my favorite Princesses movies. I feel like I can relate to both of them. I can relate with Cinderella because I also grew up poor and looked after others. I always wished I had a fairy Godmother that looked out for me and be able to find my Prince. If you think about it, Cinderella never wanted a Prince. All she wanted is to go out and have fun. I’m the same way. I loved the new Cinderella movie that came out last year! / I can also relate to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Belle and I are both book lovers and we both see the good in others. That’s how she fell in love with the Beast. I can’t wait for the new Beauty and the Beast movie to come out on March 17, 2017!

Halloweentown / Hocus Pocus / Tim Burton Movies– These are the BEST Halloween movies of all time! The first Halloweentown movie was the best one out of the four. The fourth movie sucked since they changed the actor for Marnie’s character. / Hocus Pocus is just a super awesome movie. I didn’t even know Sarah Jessica Parker was in the movie since I didn’t watch the show Sex in the City until I was older. / I’m a huge Tim Burton fan! That’s why I love The Nightmare Before ChristmasBeetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland and James and the Giant Peach. The movies are weird and twisted! Although the movie James and the Giant Peach wasn’t directed by Tim Burton, he still was one of the producers. I’ve read the book and watched the movie James and the Giant Peach a bunch of times. It was one of the books that we had to read in middle school, which was awesome.

Pokémon / Digimon –  Like I said, I grew up with boys. My brothers loved Pokémon more than Digimon. I think I was the only one that watched that show. I never played with the cards. I never understood it. I used to collect the Pokémon toys. I have no idea what happened to them.

Space Jam / Under Wraps / Matilda – Who wouldn’t love the Space Jam movie? It’s a combination of basketball and the Looney Tunes! I’m a big fan of both! / The Under Wraps movie is more funny than scary. I’m not a fan of mummies, but the movie was still really cool. I actually recorded this movie when it was on tv. It’s on a VHS tape somewhere in the house. / Matilda is a super cool movie! I wish I could move things with my mind. I actually did use to try that when I was younger.
